Entrepreneur Life

In the early years of my career I worked for many people in many sectors, just ask anyone who knows me. I had more jobs than some will have in a lifetime. If I didn’t like what I was doing, I would leave. Although I felt lost, I didn’t realize I was on a journey to understanding who I am and where I wanted to be.
I graduated from a post graduate in public relations in 2012 and I landed a position with one of Canada’s largest engineering firms. Landing a corporate job is what every graduate wants, isn’t it? I had my own cubicle, made money and worked among some of the most brilliant people, but for some reason I was restless and unsatisfied. My day consisted of completing a days work well before noon, finishing my lunch prior to lunch, checking the clock every hour, making multiple trips to the washroom and finding any excuse to leave early. I couldn’t understand how people celebrated 30 years at their job, let alone I didn’t think I was going to celebrate a year. I knew I needed out and that’s exactly what I did. I volunteered at a boutique PR company and within one account I knew I could do this on my own. I just needed the confidence and that’s exactly what that company gave me.
I’ve always loved sports and entertainment and thought if I get to create a job for myself I want to represent athletes and artists, but in a fun and exciting way. In 2012 I started my own public relations firm, which allowed me to work along side some of the worlds coolest artists and professional athletes from CFL players to Snoop Dogg. My days were never the same and usually fun. I absolutely loved what I did, but for unforeseen circumstances I had to take a break and put the company on hold.
Upon returning to my career I asked myself what am I truly passionate about, what did I not like about my previous company and if I could start another one what would it be?

Most of all I love fashion, I love to create, I love negotiating and making deals, building relationships and positively impacting the community in which I operate. Therefore it was a no brainer I needed to work for myself It’s been a long time in the making and on a true Canadian winter night at the Toronto Maple Leaf game @oliveandsplash was born. It took a VERY long time to somewhat understand an industry I never went to school for or had any previous experience in and I am still learning to this day.
It hasn’t been easy, there are many, many late nights, uncontrollable tears, abnormal amounts of stress, BIG mistakes, loneliness, burnouts and breakdowns. BUUUUT there are awesome accomplishments, challenges achieved, flexibility, creative control, relationships that will last a lifetime, personal and professional growth that some will never understand and for those reasons alone it is worth it. I was born to be an entrepreneur and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you’re thinking of making the leap I encourage you to do it. It’s been the best decision of my life and I wish everyone enjoyed working sixteen hours a day, seven days a week as much as I do.
