In the early years of my career I worked for many people in many sectors, just ask anyone who knows me. I had more jobs than some will have in a lifetime. If I didn’t like what I was doing, I would leave. Although I felt lost, I didn’t realize I was on a journey to understanding who I am and where I wanted to be.
I graduated from a post graduate in public relations in 2012 and I landed a position with one of Canada’s largest engineering firms. Landing a corporate job is what every graduate wants, isn’t it? I had my own cubicle, made money and worked among some of the most brilliant people, but for some reason I was restless and unsatisfied. My day consisted of completing a days work well before noon, finishing my lunch prior to lunch, checking the clock every hour, making multiple trips to the washroom and finding any excuse to leave early. I couldn’t understand how people celebrated 30 years at their job, let alone I didn’t think I was going to celebrate a year. I knew I needed out and that’s exactly what I did. I volunteered at a boutique PR company and within one account I knew I could do this on my own. I just needed the confidence and that’s exactly what that company gave me.
I’ve always loved sports and entertainment and thought if I get to create a job for myself I want to represent athletes and artists, but in a fun and exciting way. In 2012 I started my own public relations firm, which allowed me to work along side some of the worlds coolest artists and professional athletes from CFL players to Snoop Dogg. My days were never the same and usually fun. I absolutely loved what I did, but for unforeseen circumstances I had to take a break and put the company on hold.
Upon returning to my career I asked myself what am I truly passionate about, what did I not like about my previous company and if I could start another one what would it be?
Most of all I love fashion, I love to create, I love negotiating and making deals, building relationships and positively impacting the community in which I operate. Therefore it was a no brainer I needed to work for myself It’s been a long time in the making and on a true Canadian winter night at the Toronto Maple Leaf game @oliveandsplash was born. It took a VERY long time to somewhat understand an industry I never went to school for or had any previous experience in and I am still learning to this day.
It hasn’t been easy, there are many, many late nights, uncontrollable tears, abnormal amounts of stress, BIG mistakes, loneliness, burnouts and breakdowns. BUUUUT there are awesome accomplishments, challenges achieved, flexibility, creative control, relationships that will last a lifetime, personal and professional growth that some will never understand and for those reasons alone it is worth it. I was born to be an entrepreneur and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you’re thinking of making the leap I encourage you to do it. It’s been the best decision of my life and I wish everyone enjoyed working sixteen hours a day, seven days a week as much as I do.
There are many personal and environmental benefits to wearing bamboo clothing, Olive + Splash has designed a whole bamboo children's clothing line that gives back to the David Suzuki Foundation, which is only more reason everyone should be wearing this powerhouse material and support the movement.
The benefits of bamboo outweigh any other material out there, it features built-in temperature controls, which keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, it's chemical-free processing does wonders for the human body and environment we live in, the hypoallergenic fibers are allergy friendly and make a great clothing choice for anyone with sensitivities or require calming sensory clothing, the UV resistant material is a blessing in disguise when it comes to the sun's harmful UV rays, the antibacterial bio-agent 'bamboo kun'; a natural anti-fungal fiber found within bamboo reduces bacteria that thrives on clothing and skin, in addition to its highly moisture absorbent properties it is also biodegradable allowing the textiles to return to the earth in an organic and Eco-friendly way.
The reason we love this material so much goes deeper than its cashmere soft surface. Bamboo fibers itself are naturally round and smooth without any chemical treatment as opposed to some textile fibers that naturally have sharp edges and spurs that irritate the skin and can only be softened with the harshest of chemicals. The scary part about these highly toxic chemicals resting on your skin is they will be absorbed into the blood stream in less than 26 seconds and will be filtered into the your major organs, which can lead to hormone disruption, disorders and even some cancers. When we wash these toxic clothes the chemicals seep into the water and back into the Eco-system which will then be turned into our drinking water, soil for our food and breathing air. Therefore the less chemically processed material is a win for both our bodies and environment.
The best part is, the more washes the material has, the softer the garment becomes making it a pleasure to buy and wear on a continuous basis. Olive + Splash has designed a Canadian made, Eco-friendly garment to protect your precious little ones from the inside out that will last numerous washes, wears and generations to come.
